Compass Draft is a small travel-writing site. This policy sets out exactly what we collect when you read it, why we collect it, and what you can ask us to do about it. If anything here is unclear, write to info@compassdraft.com and we will explain it in plain terms.

What you give us directly

  • Newsletter — if you subscribe, we store the email address you enter and the date you subscribed. We use it only to send the newsletter. Every issue carries a one-click unsubscribe link, and unsubscribing deletes you from the list.
  • Contact form and email — the name, email address and message you send us. We keep correspondence so we can follow up on corrections and answer questions about a route or city, and we delete threads that no longer serve a purpose.

What is collected automatically

Like most websites, our server and our analytics record which pages were requested, roughly where in the world the request came from (derived from the IP address, not a precise location), the browser and device used, and the page that referred you. We look at this in aggregate to see which guides people actually use and which ones need rewriting. We do not use it to build a profile of you as an individual.

Advertising, analytics and the third parties involved

The site is funded by display advertising through Google AdSense, and we use Google Analytics to measure traffic. Both are operated by Google, which sets its own cookies and processes data under its own terms rather than ours. Google may use cookies or device identifiers to serve advertising based on your prior visits to this and other sites. You can turn personalised advertising off at Google Ad Settings, and review how Google handles data at policies.google.com. Where consent is legally required, advertising and analytics cookies are only set after you give it through the consent banner, and you can change your answer at any time.

Some articles contain affiliate links. Following one may pass a referral identifier to the retailer so a commission can be attributed. It costs you nothing extra and does not change what we recommend.

What we do not do

We do not sell personal data, we do not share your email address with advertisers, and we do not send marketing on behalf of third parties.

Your rights

Wherever you live, you can ask us what data we hold about you, ask for it to be corrected, or ask us to delete it. If you are in the UK or the European Economic Area, the UK GDPR and GDPR also give you the right to object to processing, to request portability, and to complain to your national data protection authority. Our lawful bases are consent for the newsletter and for non-essential cookies, and legitimate interest for keeping the site secure and understanding aggregate traffic.

Retention

Newsletter addresses are kept until you unsubscribe. Contact messages are kept while the matter is open and then removed. Aggregate analytics data is retained according to Google's own retention settings.

Children

This site is written for adults planning their own travel and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect their data; if you believe a child has sent us information, tell us and we will delete it.

Changes and contact

If this policy changes we will update the date at the top. For any privacy question, email info@compassdraft.com with “privacy” in the subject line, or use the contact page.
