This page explains which cookies Compass Draft sets, what each one is for, and how to refuse the ones that are not strictly necessary. It sits alongside our Privacy Policy, which covers personal data more broadly.
What a cookie actually is
A cookie is a small text file a site asks your browser to store, so that something can be remembered between page loads — that you have already dismissed the consent banner, for example. Similar technologies such as local storage and pixels do much the same job, and we treat them the same way in this policy.
The categories we use
- Strictly necessary — these keep the site working and secure: the session cookie, the token that protects the contact form against cross-site request forgery, and the cookie that records your consent choice so you are not asked on every page. They cannot be switched off, because without them the site cannot function safely.
- Analytics — set by Google Analytics to count visits and show which guides get read to the end. We use them in aggregate. Where consent is required, these are only set after you agree.
- Advertising — set by Google AdSense and its partners to select ads, limit how often you see the same one, and measure whether an ad worked. These are what make personalised advertising possible, and they are the ones most readers want control over.
Turning them off
You can decline analytics and advertising cookies in the consent banner when you first arrive, and change that decision later through the same banner. Independently of us, you can switch off personalised advertising for your Google account at Google Ad Settings, or opt out across many advertising networks at aboutads.info and youronlinechoices.eu.
Every major browser also lets you block or delete cookies directly — look for Privacy or Site Settings in Chrome, Firefox, Safari or Edge. Blocking strictly necessary cookies will break the contact form and make the consent banner reappear on every page.
Third-party cookies we do not control
Cookies set by Google are governed by Google's policies, not ours. We can tell you which categories we enable and honour your consent choice; we cannot change what those partners store or how long they keep it. Their current practice is documented at policies.google.com/technologies/cookies.
